Trip Background
Egypt had been on our travel calendar for a very long time. We originally planned this journey for 2020, but like so many trips during that year, it was cancelled because of COVID. For three years, the pyramids, temples, tombs, and treasures of ancient Egypt remained just beyond our reach. When we finally arrived in May 2023, it felt like much more than the beginning of another vacation—it felt like the completion of a journey years in the making. Egypt is a country where the past is never far away. Ancient pyramids rise above the edge of modern Cairo, enormous temples line the Nile, and richly decorated tombs reveal stories that have survived for thousands of years. But this trip would take us beyond the Egypt we had read about in history books. We would explore the streets and landmarks of Cairo, snorkel among colorful fish in the Red Sea, sail through the heart of the country on the Nile and stand inside some of the most extraordinary ancient sites in the world.
Egypt Background
Pink Bear was so excited to be researching Egypt. She started by gathering some basic information about Egypt, so we would have some understanding of the country before we arrived.
Geography: Egypt is in northeastern Africa, with the Sinai Peninsula extending into Asia. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Red Sea to the east, Libya to the west, and Sudan to the south. Although most of the country is desert, the Nile River creates a narrow ribbon of fertile land that has supported life in Egypt for thousands of years. Most Egyptians still live near the Nile or within its broad delta, where the river empties into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile flows northward through Egypt, connecting many of the country’s most important cities and ancient sites. Cairo, Egypt’s capital and largest city, lies near the Nile Delta in the north. Farther south are Luxor and Aswan, the starting points for many Nile cruises. Hurghada sits along the Red Sea coast, known for its clear water, coral reefs, and abundant marine life.
History: Ancient Egyptian civilization began more than 5,000 years ago and developed into one of the most powerful and influential civilizations in history. Around 3100 BCE, Upper and Lower Egypt were united under a single ruler, beginning the long era of the pharaohs. Over the centuries, the Egyptians constructed enormous pyramids, temples, monuments, and tombs while making important advances in architecture, mathematics, medicine, astronomy, and writing. The pyramids at Giza were built during Egypt’s Old Kingdom, while many of the great temples and royal tombs found near Luxor date from the later New Kingdom. Famous rulers such as Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and Ramesses II lived during this period. The pharaohs were eventually followed by periods of Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Ottoman, and British influence.
Culture: Modern Egypt became a republic in 1953. Today, it is a country where ancient history and everyday modern life exist side by side. Bustling cities, rural villages, desert landscapes, Nile farmland, Mediterranean shores, and Red Sea resorts are all part of the Egyptian experience.
Map Visual: Pink Bear found a nice map that included important tourist sights.
Planning
Those of you following our Pink Bear travel adventures know that our retirement trip planning consists of the five W’s:
Who is going: Because this was such a long journey that involved extended travel, it included just those not in the workforce, Tom, Pink Bear and me.
When to go: Because of Egypt’s hot, arid climate Pink Bear did not want to travel in the summer, her heavy coat would make her very uncomfortable in the heat. Based on availability we selected May. We had time in May and it was still in the spring season.
Where to go: Pink Bear has been fascinated with Egypt, so we set her to work on where to go in Egypt.
Pink Bear needed to decide whether we would have a land vacation, sea journey, or a combination of the two. As part of retirement adventures, we have moved away from large cruise ships and crowded destinations. In addition, as we have become more accustomed to traveling, we find we enjoy spending more time in one area and appreciate learning about the people, culture and customs in the places we visit. We prefer, river and expedition small ship cruises and land vacations. These offer a more immersive experience, rather than a non-stop party.
For Egypt a river cruise seemed an ideal choice, since the Nile River is a major part of Egyptian life. Since we had traveled with Viking River cruises before and enjoyed the experience, their Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise seemed a logical extension. Viking offers a quality product at a reasonable cost. We enjoy their small ships, with innovative design features and the signature Scandinavian décor. In our opinion the cabins are some of the best designed and efficient in the industry in our opinion.
The cruise we selected was on the Viking Ra riverboat, originating in and ending in Cairo. As part of the Viking package, it included and overnight in Cairo and a flight to Luxor where we would board the Ra vessel. The package was called “Pharaohs & Pyramids.
This map describes the route we took on our riverboat journey.

Since we wanted additional time in Egypt, as previously noted we added pre and post cruise extension time on both ends.
Our General Egypt Itinerary:
Where to Stay: Once we decided where we wanted to go, we decided where to stay. For this trip accommodations would be cruise cabin and hotels. Our choice of cabin was a veranda suite on the Ra. For the pre-cruise hotel in Cairo, we chose the Sheraton, since that was hotel for the cruise package and we would not have to change rooms upon joining the Viking tour portion. For Hurghada we chose the Marriott since those of you following our journey know we are Bonvoy platinum elite.
What to do: For sightseeing we selected private tours since we wanted to get the most out of this foreign country. At our age and for a personal upscale experience private tours are the way to go. For this trip Pink Bear chose Deluxe Tours, and we could not have been happier with them. Not only was our tour guide and driver first rate but they we have stayed in touch with both over the years. In addition, Deluxe tours went out of their way to assist us when we had a near catastrophe. More about that later in the blog.
All the travel information Pink Bear gathers go into a spread sheet. We color code for easy identification. We include times but they are exact for some things rough estimates for others.
